Self-taught Jamaican-born designer Matthew Harris launched Mateo from New York's jewelry district in 2009. Worn by Michelle Obama, Kerry Washington, and Rihanna, Mateo's 14k gold pieces blend minimalism with bold cultural identity. In 2016, the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture selected Mateo to be sold in its store.
