Travel & Hospitality

The oldest African American-owned inn in America. Charles Shearer -- born enslaved on a Virginia plantation, educated at Hampton -- and his wife Henrietta converted their Oak Bluffs laundry into a vacation inn for Black travelers in 1912. Madame C.J. Walker, Paul Robeson, and Ethel Waters all stayed here. Still owned and operated by the Shearer family descendants.
