Former Essence Editor-in-Chief Monique Greenwood left the magazine world to open Akwaaba Mansion in Brooklyn's Bed-Stuy in 1995. 'Akwaaba' means welcome in Twi. The collection has grown to five properties: Brooklyn, Washington DC, Cape May NJ, Philadelphia, and a Pocono Mountains resort in the former F.W. Woolworth estate. Spawned the reality series Checked Inn.
